BIM segregation has begun

The  ISO  (International Organization for Standardization) has published a draft international standard specifying the requirements for information management during the project delivery phase when using BIM. The standard can be applied to all asset types, organizations, and sizes, regardless of the methodology’s procurement strategy. ISO 19650-2 is intended for use by those involved in:

  • Management or production of information during the asset delivery phase.
  • Definition and acquisition of construction projects.
  • Specify appointments and facilitate collaborative work.
  • Design, build, operate and maintain assets.
  • Increasing business value from their asset base.

ISO 19650-2 describes the concepts and principles for successful information management at a maturity stage described as BIM according to ISO 19650. This provides the necessary recommendations for working within a framework that includes sharing, recording, versioning, and organization for all involved parties. The standard applies to the entire asset lifecycle, from strategic planning to end-of-life, and is required reading for:

  • Asset owners/operators.
  • Project clients.
  • Asset managers.
  • Design teams.
  • Construction supply chain.
  • Equipment manufacturers.
  • System specialists.
  • Regulators.
  • End users.

There are, obviously, different acquisition routes and possible planning changes for both clients and owners, depending on their requirements. On the other hand, the principles and concepts of the new draft regulations are adaptable to the circumstances and needs of activities related to asset management and project delivery. Information requirements must be concise and provide guidance on how each process will be carried out , so the details must be agreed upon in a timely manner so they can be carried out efficiently and effectively. This is what is already being done on every project… right?

National standards bodies in various countries are currently consulting with their respective stakeholders and will include relevant local standards, methods, and procedures in a national annex. The BSI in the United Kingdom has published documents as part of the industry consultation.

Part 2:  Delivery phases and assets

For its part, the CEN (European Committee for Standardization) announced last January the  adoption of three new  international standards aimed at managing the structuring processes of electronic or digital building information, using BIM as the primary tool. This organization’s work focuses on the European level and works closely with other organizations such as ISO, ISO/TC 59, and NSAI.
