The new BIM element classification system by “function”

The first version of the GuBIMclass element classification system was published on June 21st , the result of a collaboration between the Catalan BIM User Group and Infrastructures of Catalonia.

The Construction Element Classification System, based on its primary function and specifically designed for working in BIM environments, was the first system published nationwide.

GuBIMclass is the result of collaborative work carried out by members of the BIM User Group of Catalonia, after having studied the different international classification systems and taking as a starting point the foundation developed by Infrastructures de Catalunya until then.

The objective was to develop a classification system that meets the needs of the AEC sector. The work was based on an existing local system with the goal of evolving it and transforming it into a useful tool for the sector. It was designed to achieve maximum consensus and usability among the different BIM user profiles, while maintaining alignment with the local idiosyncrasies that underpinned the initial system.

The basic principles on which GuBIMclass is based are:

Function criterion as a guarantee of traceability throughout the entire life cycle, regardless of the uses of BIM or the phases of the project life cycle
Homogeneity in the entire system
Common language as a means of promoting improved communication

The system was presented to Infrastructures of Catalonia as an improvement proposal to be incorporated into the entity’s BIM requirements. As a result, Infrastructures of Catalonia has decided to adopt the GuBIMclass classification as its own, acting as the system operator. GuBIMcat, as the system’s creator, will maintain an active role in its maintenance and dissemination.

In addition to the commitment to Infrastructures of Catalonia, the GuBIMclass system has been presented at various conferences and events, and to public entities and organizations. Of note is the company’s participation in EUBIM and the BSSCH Assembly, presenting and explaining the system, and its presentation to Incasol, an organization that has already adopted the system. Several public and private organizations in Catalonia currently plan to soon incorporate the GuBIMclass system into their BIM requirements.
