Location: Salalah, Oman
Description

Project Description

The airport includes a new 4,000 m runway capable of accommodating large aircraft types. The airport will have a 57 meter high Air Traffic Control Tower and will be equipped with eight contact stands, a car park for over 2,200 cars and a number of other buildings. Overall the project will contain 25 different buildings spread across the land. The new airport is designed to have a capacity of two million passengers a year.

The Challenge

iTech was appointed to provide Project BIM Management, Custom Content Creation, and support the engineering team in the design, coordination, and documentation of the HVAC systems of the airport. This was the first BIM project for our Client which brought several challenges along the way with the corporate BIM implementation.

The Solution

The MEP models were used to create a clash free design model, produce shop drawings and coordinate between the site. The MEP models were also used to study day-lighting and shading of the main departure hall and study the effects on the cooling load. By sharing discipline-specific design models, the overall project design was naturally well coordinated. In addition to 3d modeling, Autodesk Navisworks Manage was used to aggregate cross-discipline design models and to help perform clash detection in preparation for project design reviews. This helped the team to make quick, on-the spot decisions and resolve design interferences minimizing field delays and costly change orders.

The Result

Throughout the project, the extended design and construction team placed a strong emphasis on the use of a common Revit design platform for cross-discipline project collaboration and coordination. The BIM approach to this project helped manage the client’s expectations and assisted in the decision making process. The focus for the contractor and supply chain was on cost, time and quality.
