Germany announces the implementation of the BIM for infrastructures from 2020

Germany continues its commitment to BIM. At a forum held in Berlin, the country presented plans to introduce BIM in the planning and construction of large-scale transport projects by 2020. Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated: “Today we are launching an initiative to digitalize the construction industry. By applying the most sophisticated digital methods, construction projects will be carried out more efficiently, avoiding schedule and budget overruns. We will mandate the use of BIM for both the planning and construction of our infrastructure starting in 2020, and its use will be optimized through pilot projects. This initiative aims to modernize the German construction sector globally.”
The plan presented by Dobrindt is divided into several phases: a preparatory phase until 2017, and after that, a pilot phase leading up to 2020, during which BIM will be mandatory for all new projects of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. Before then, the necessary conditions, standards, and legal and technical framework will be established.
“We want to make digital planning and construction a national standard,” Dobrindt continued. “As a major client, the public sector must take the initiative and promote cultural change. To this end, we have established a Commission for Large-Scale Project Construction and have formulated a very clear principle: build digitally before doing so in reality. We have launched four pilot projects to test BIM, and the Ministry has developed a plan for future planning and construction that will make this new methodology the new standard for transport infrastructure projects by 2020.”
