Meshmixer 3.0: New Autodesk 3D Modeler

Autodesk introduces
Meshmixer , a 3D modeling and design tool that allows you to create new 3D models from existing mesh data. This is especially useful when using Autodesk applications such as
Autodesk 123D Catch , a mobile app that generates these types of files from scanned digital photographs. New to this feature is Meshmixer 3.0, which also introduces the “complex objects” option, making it easier to prepare 3D models for subsequent printing in multiple materials.
The latest version of the software is specifically focused on multi-material design.
Using tools like “complex objects” (according to Autodesk, a complex object is a “single object that contains a breakdown into distinct regions composed of multiple materials”
), users can manipulate and deconstruct 3D models in entirely new ways. Now, with just a few clicks, Meshmixer users can select internal regions of 3D models to be treated as separate parts of the same object. Without losing the object’s shape, these parts can be altered in a targeted manner.

The software also includes the ability to split a 3D model into multiple materials based on surface markings. There are also features designed for users working with laser cutters. The new “split” feature allows users to flatten patches of 3D surfaces into 2D ones. These same patches can be exported as SVG and sent to a printer or laser cutter.
The software also introduces a new way to scale a 3D model more precisely using the “Units/Dimensions” tool. From here, users can enter any known measurements in a region of the 3D model, and the software will generate the appropriate measurements relative to other regions of the map. Meshmixer 3.0 was announced last January at the Autodesk Research SiGGraph 2016 conference.
