In Queensland, Australia, the Government has decided to make BIM mandatory for public infrastructure projects of more than 50 million. The measure will be implemented in July 1, 2019 and the content is already published. With this initiative, the Australian state Government recognizes the importance of BIM in infrastructure delivery and management, as it offers many benefits throughout the asset life cycle and can improve efficiency, profitability, productivity, efficiency innovation and security.

The Queensland government has recognized both the opportunities and benefits that BIM could offer when launching the state infrastructure plan in March 2016. To maximize the benefits of applying BIM to all major projects, its annual capital program, these principles will support the effective use of BIM. These principles include the development of BIM capabilities across government and industry.

It takes courage for a government and a department to put this type of measure in place. Australia, therefore, joins the vast majority of countries that have reached this milestone. And France is still an exception with its non-obligation since it is the only country, in this case, Italy and Germany have announced measures similar to those of Australia.

To announce the main principles of this obligation, the Queensland Government makes available its "Policy" online. We learn in particular that naturally, the projects will have to be delivered in openBIM.
