How BIM helps to overcome MEP Design Challenges

Integrating MEP model with the construction and operation of a building is still a major challenge

Published: 16/08/2018

MEP design teams face several challenges across the design phase. What are these MEP design challenges? Can MEP challenges be resolved with help of BIM?

Integrating MEP model with the construction and operation of a building is a major challenge. Some of the important points that need consideration for MEP BIM integration include – Space allocation during design phase, fulfilling spatial requirements for MEP systems and individual equipment etc.

Space allocation for MEP Systems and Equipment

It is very important that an MEP engineer is given an accurate architectural model during the early design stages. This allows him to right size and plan the layouts for MEP systems and equipment.

Why is it important for MEP engineers that owners and architect agree on the building design?

Because, this agreement means that the design is finalized and there will be no change at the later stages. If any changes occur, then, the MEP system design also needs to be changed accordingly.

Most engineers add nearly 10% to 25 % onto the load calculation leaving margin for minor changes, however in case of any major architectural changes at a later stage it becomes difficult to optimize MEP system design. Early and informed decision making via MEP BIM coordination, constructability reviews and clash detection can lead to huge benefits for the owners.

Additionally, with MEP BIM at their disposal, enables engineers to keep a visual factual account of how their expert advice and MEP BIM engineering solutions garnered the best profits for owner/client.

Spatial Coordination for MEP Systems

Within a facility, whether it is a commercial building, healthcare facility, residential building or a mixed use building, space is the most important factor, and space unused is directly associated with reduced ROI. Several MEP equipment are huge and need to be placed in the most suitable spaces.

How does BIM help in preparing the layout for ducts and 2/4 pipes

With BIM the most important MEP and structural elements can be placed first within the architecture. The other MEP components and structural framework can be built around these basic MEP components. Thus because of the effective visualization and collaboration that BIM enables, all the three disciplines that is the architectural, structural and MEP can beautifully fit into a single ecosystem co-existing and making the best utilization of available space.

Power of detailing

BIM has the power of visualization. Every detail - down to the minutest can be modeled. Of course this the capability of BIM – however is it necessary to model everything. This is for the BIM user to decide. Do not let information influx affect your project outcomes. Certain Elements like the bathroom fittings need not be modeled; these can be shown in the detailing.
