Roads and bridges have never been or will be an easy task for civil engineers. Preliminary studies of maps, landmarks, location of property lines and project characteristics (buildings, fences, trees, roads, waterways, sewers ...), cross-sections, Impact studies and cost estimation are only part of what is required for their development process.

There is conceptual design, engineering, detailing and construction. In this technology era, however, automation, integration, and BIM facilitate the availability of project information, making it easier for the conceptual design process to be completed more quickly. Recently, Bentley Systems has announced the launch of a new BIM software that aims to achieve precisely this.

In the OpenRoads

OpenRoads ConceptStation is a new application that allows civil engineering professionals to create conceptual models of roads and bridges in a matter of hours, rather than days. This application is able to achieve much faster modeling, thanks to the use of relevant BIM data, obtained from existing point clouds, reality meshes, GIS ...

About the existing BIM data, OpenRoads ConceptStation allows for better decision making by using drawing tools and engineering project costs. These tools allow engineers and designers to evaluate the options and costs along the planning stage of a project. The conceptual final design models are uploaded to OpenRoads or OpenBridge. This promises the agility of the process as well as help to ensure that the original design is made through the project workflow.

Characteristics of the road design 

Then, what can the OpenRoads ConcepStation expect? Bentley has announced some of the key functions of the application:

• PT VISSIM: the integration with this software will allow the analysis and planning of the traffic.

• GeoCoordinación: Esta característica está diseñada para ayudar a los usuarios a encontrar, descargar, importar y georreferenciar información contextual para los diseños obtenida a partir de nubes de puntos, mallas de realidad de los datos de terreno, imágenes e información GIS. Esto ayudará a los flujos de trabajo de modelado 3D.
• Herramientas de boceto: Los usuarios tendrán acceso a un conjunto de herramientas diseñadas para ayudar a crear modelos 3D con rapidez y eficacia. Esto incluirá herramientas para carreteras, puentes, rampas, barandillas, muros de retención, entre otros.
• Coste del Proyecto: OpenRoads ConceptStation generará automáticamente los costes del proyecto. Esto ayudará a ingenieros y planificadores a identificar artículos de importe elevado y de riesgos potenciales, así como determinar las cantidades necesarias de cada material.
• LumenRT: La aplicación está integrada con el software de visualización y modelado de la realidad de Bentley, por lo que los usuarios podrán crear escenarios realistas de forma rápida y sin necesidad de procesamiento intensivo.
• PTV VISSIM: La integración con este software permitirá el análisis y la planificación del tráfico.

"OpenRoads ConceptStation nos permite ensamblar fácilmente los datos sobre condiciones existentes en las diferentes fuentes del comienzo de un proyecto," explicó Mark Urban, vicepresidente senior de proyectos de diseño y construcción en HNTB Corporation, a lo que añadió: "A partir de esta información de base, somos capaces de crear varias alternativas de diseño para el desarrollo de negocios."
