We don’t know where all the old infrastructure is under the ground. We cut the cables, break the pipes and make work very slow and ineffective. Is there a way to fix this?

There are no Accurate Designs.

We have seen how designs have had 30cm accent compared the old infrastructure right next to it. We have seen how solid rock analysis go fully wrong. We have seen old cables that are found 6 meters away from the expected area.


Construction work operates on expectations and estimations of old infrastructure, but we never know where they truly are.


Old registry of cables, water pipes or grounds height makes decision making, estimations and work itself very inefficient. Digging the ground needs a lot of experience to make it fast.


The result of this problem, construction workers need to make changes to designs. Well, not direct changes to the designs, but writing reports and doing on-site decisions to build needed infrastructure differently from the designs.


And guess what? So does the cycle repeat. We start with inaccurate information and we end up inaccurate information.


Jero, don’t be so over dramatic! Today we take more log points, images, and reports! This will be used in the future! We have the accurate information on how it was built!


Do we? Really? What I see in my day-to-day life, we give digital handover to the client in a USB-stick and the client will throw that in the table box. In a future, how much information from that USB-strick are used?


Not much.


The cycle goes like before. Downloading files from registry like before and from there starting to build up the designs.

Way To Break Cycle of Inaccuracy.


How can we affect this? The mistakes were done 50-100 years before and 50-100 years in the future we still have the same problem.


It comes down to two issues to be solved:


  1. How can we collect all important information in a place where it is convenient and actionable to reuse in the future?

  1. How can we record all small changes to the built environment that differs from the as-built graphs? And collect those changes into a place where it is convenient to reuse in the future.

Let tackle down the convenience and actionable first.


It comes down to choosing a good tool to save the information. Library of folders, even digital folders are not very convenient. We have been hunting for all the information for weeks. The medium we use to save all information needs to be something that takes only minutes to gather all necessary information on that location. If it takes longer, it is not actionable. No one is going to dig weeks for files.


Before choosing the tool where to save all this data, let’s ask ourselves a couple things first:


“How this information can be actionable and conveniently found?”


What do you mean actionable?


The information needs to be enough visual that person searching for specific details can find it and take it forward as easily. If you want to know specific well’s location and how the pipes were connected to it, how fast can you get this information handy?


“Is getting the information more troublesome than just going with new information?”


This can mean that the information is not enough value to make any positive change in costs or that the information is too abstract that folder library. Also the property management tool is not intelligent enough to give it directly to you.


“If we do change the tool in a future, is the data easy to move to the new tool?”


We all been there. Lockdown to the systems of one brand. Stick with the open ecosystem even if it costs more. If you get into the lockdown, it will cost in other areas of infra construction.


The goal here is to think from user-perspective. What information do we need? What we don't?

The information we need, is it easy to take into design or into construction?


Also the last question:

“Do we collect all decisions made that affect our infrastructure?”


Okay, are we good on the first one?

Great!


The second one.


With inaccurate knowledge of how all water pipes and other infrastructure was built 50 years before, we get a lot of troubles in our construction.


We might found out that designed new water pipe doesn’t fit in the ground, because old waterpipe was closer to the surface than expected and we have to make decisions on-site to get construction complete.


Here there are two options.


Let the contractors make their decision and write a report.


Here you need to then put emphasis on collecting that information and making that information enough easy to access and understand. Otherwise, we are not any better than before construction.


Or


Have a designer to be part of the construction. Have him with you to do the on-site visits and follow the site to be built up.


Why?


Having them not there, is something that I really don’t understand.


As we all do know, construction never becomes exactly like designs. That’s why it is important that the vision of a designer will reach contractor as well.


A lot of changes will happen during construction and it is very important that there is the vision holder to watch that the end results will become same as we had designed.


It also clarifies a lot of things for the contractor on what it should end up to look alike.


This is crucial! If this is not done, the project has a high potential to end up something that municipalities did not want to have.


From these two options, I highly recommend this one. When comparing the benefits, having a designer on site to do check-in and guide contractor to make best out of the construction process.

This information is important to get enough accurate if you want to save money in your future infra construction projects.
